Ophthalmic emergencies are conditions of sudden illness, accident, injury or similar events that require medical intervention within the first 24 hours of the incident, or any situation in which life and/or the integrity of health is considered to be at risk if medical intervention is not provided immediately or the patient is transferred to another health facility.

Health services delivered in these situations are accepted as emergency medical services.
