DEFINITION AND SCOPE
Preventive Health Services
Preventive health services cover the pre-illness care that minimises or prevents the risk, severity and duration of possible future disease or disability, by identifying signs of illness before the patient is aware of them and ensuring that treatment is delivered in the earliest phase of disease.
Preventive health services represent a form of action taken against the threat itself. Eliminating the threat is, fundamentally, a contribution to both individual and community safety.
If these first-line functions are not carried out, the consequences may include the loss of health, loss of life, loss of productivity and output, loss of meaning in life, and economic loss.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
Characteristics of Preventive Health Services
- They are far more economical than curative health services.
- They are more effective and of higher priority than all other forms of treatment.
- They do not require large-scale investments, equipment or supplies.
- They substantially reduce the burden on healthcare institutions.
- They instil, at both the individual and societal level, an awareness of leading a healthy life.
- They are easy both to deliver and to implement.
