The most important step in LASIK treatment is the creation of a flap on the upper part of the cornea. In recent years, femtosecond-laser technology has come to be used for the creation of the flap. The femtosecond laser is a device that can create incisions in tissue at the desired depth, width and shape. The FS 200 femtosecond laser is the fastest and safest technology developed for this purpose.
Advantages of Femto-LASIK (Bladeless LASIK):
- – Thanks to this device, the complications that could be seen with the microkeratome systems used previously have been almost eliminated.
- – With the femtosecond laser, flaps can be created that are tailored to the individual’s refractive error.
- – Results are more successful, particularly in the treatment of hyperopia and astigmatism.
- – With femtosecond-laser flaps, the biomechanics of the cornea are better preserved.
- – Because a flap of the desired thickness can be lifted, LASIK can be applied even in patients whose corneal thickness is at borderline values.
- – Because the flap interface is smoother, less aberration (light scatter) develops after laser treatment.
- – With femtosecond-laser flaps, the risk of developing dry eye — particularly observed in older patients — is lower.
- – In addition to creating flaps, femtosecond-laser systems can be used to insert corneal implants and to perform keratoplasty (corneal transplant) and astigmatic keratotomy procedures.
